The Global Graphene Group, known as G3, has opened up a third building for its graphene manufacturing facility in Dayton, Ohio and held a Grand Opening with state, county and city officials and investors on May 18th 2017.
Graphene, the thinnest material in the world, is renowned for its host of unique properties. It is stronger than steel, more conductive than copper, transparent, and flexible.
The company, which started with three employees in The Entrepreneurs Center in downtown Dayton, has become a world leader in graphene production and commercialization. It now boasts over 80 employees at five locations worldwide, with over 40 of them in Dayton. Over 28% of the employees are Ph.Ds.
“We pioneered and patented the world’s first graphene patent,” said Dr. Bor Z. Jang, CEO and co-founder of G3. “We were the first ones to have a major graphene production facility, which we established back in 2013. We’ve also invented various different applications of graphene, such as graphene-based supercapacitors, batteries, composite materials — a wide variety products that we were the first to invent.”
The company secured a $10 million dollar investment from financial firm Western & Southern in July of 2016.
“I am a firm believer in the importance of innovation and high-skilled jobs to the growth and economic prosperity of our region. I am proud of the role that Western & Southern has and will continue to play in the economic development of Ohio,” said John F. Barrett, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Western & Southern. “The innovation displayed thus far by the two cofounders, Dr. Jang and Dr. Zhamu, and their team at G3 is truly remarkable. They are true entrepreneurs, and I am excited for the future of their company.”
“The dawn of graphene has finally arrived, and it’s coming out of the labs and into the living rooms,” said Edward M. Chan, Executive Vice President of Global Graphene Group. “Innovation in the mass market is the intersection of unique performance and low cost of production. In other words, the cost to performance metric must be enticing to end users to ‘cross the chasm,’ and G3 is at that intersection.”
Graphene Entrepreneur is a division of the National Graphene Association. The Mission of the NGA is to bring together current and future graphene stakeholders — entrepreneurs, companies, researchers, developers and suppliers, investors, venture capitalists and government agencies — to drive innovation, and to promote and facilitate the commercialization of graphene products and technologies in the United States.
