While Sir Richard Branson has given up on Virgin America, he’s still in it for the long haul when it comes to improving air travel.

In a recent blog post, Branson said could hold the key to completely reshaping the industry. He stated that he was “incredibly excited” about graphene. He has been in conversation with the National Graphene Institute around the ability for the material to be used as a “catalyst for an revolution”.

Branson added that, while planes couldn’t necessarily be made entirely out of graphene, combining it with the materials currently used in aircraft manufacture means there is a huge potential to increase an aircrafts safety, performance, and structural integrity. It could also lead to a drastic reduction in aircraft weight, which would save on fuel costs.

However, scientists at the University of Manchester have said that the actual use of the product could be as far as 20 years away.
